EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917) [THE POSTER MOCKING THE CABINET PRINT.] 27 1/2x19 1/2 inches. Condition A. One color proof. A trial proof for a lithograph that we have never seen in its final state. The allegorical image depicts "the poster" (represented by a hilarious blonde) threatening the "cabinet print" (seen carrying a portfolio of prints) with her bill poster brush. The charming image is reminiscent of Pierre Bonnard's poster for L'Estampe et l'Affiche (see Swann Art Nouveau Auction #2099, lot 47) delivering the same message, that the "artistic poster" was the youthful, buoyant force that would rejuvenate the art market, which had relied too long on "classic" prints. And, indeed, between 1895 and 1900, the poster was certainly ascendant, taking such a hold on the public that the term "affichomanie" (poster mania) was coined. This is the first stone of lithograph that may never have been realized, as we have been unable to uncover any mention of it in reference books. Certainly it is uncharacteristic for Grasset, being one of the most free-handed and jubilant images that he ever drew.
